Every day on Earth, due to merciless extermination by poachers or climatic changes, more than 60 species of animals disappear. Scientists call this extinction great. Some species of animals total units of individuals. Scientists around the world are making every effort to save some species, and sometimes triumph in this struggle for the lives of rare animals.
Before you are several species that are on the verge of extinction.
1
White Rhino
Ten years ago, thirty individuals of this species remained in the world. At the moment, only two females of this species remain in nature. In March 2019, the last male of this species died at the age of 45 years. It was an old rhino, and scientists had to euthanize it because of severe suffering from various age-related diseases. But he managed to take biomaterial from him for IVF. There is the last hope for the artificial insemination of females to produce offspring of the white rhino.
Did you know that the white rhino is one of the largest mammals on earth?
2
Javan rhino
In one of his articles, thebiggest.ru wrote about extinct animals in the 21st century. One of them was the Cameroon black rhino. Another representative of the rhino species is on the verge of survival. About 60 individuals remain of the Java rhinos, and all of them are carefully guarded in the national Indonesian park. A few years ago, they lived in Vietnam, but because of their horns, poachers completely exterminated them.
3
Saola
This rare artiodactyl squad was first discovered in the jungle of northern Vietnam at the end of the 20th century. This discovery was a real sensation. At the moment, there are about two dozen animals, and all of them are under state protection. When trying to keep them in captivity, the Saols began to die in a couple of weeks. Therefore, the country's leadership strictly prohibited the hunting of these animals. Presumably, in the wild, there can be up to 100 individuals.
4
Far Eastern Leopard
This beautiful animal lives in the east of Russia and China. The total number of leopards is about 80 individuals. Most of them live and are under state protection in the national park of Primorsky Krai. Less than ten of these rare cats live in two countries. Employees of the national park in 2016 recorded the maximum increase in kittens during the existence of the park. This gives hope for the future prosperity of the Far Eastern leopard.
5
Amur tiger
Because of the beauty of the hide and magical qualities that were attributed to Amur tigers in the east, they were mercilessly destroyed. From the end of the 19th century, and in just a century, a large population of tigers left a few surviving animals. At the time of the forties, no more than forty tigers remained in nature. At the moment, in Russia there is a state program for the protection and reproduction of this magnificent, largest tiger in the world. Thanks to this program, the number of Amur tigers has grown to 580. This is exactly as much as the taiga can feed at the moment. But it is planned to further increase their numbers for resettlement in other natural parks of the world.
6
Giraffe Rothschild
This is the tallest animal in the world, has a large and bright pattern among other giraffes. It lives in Uganda. Allegedly, there are just over 500 animals. A distinctive feature of giraffes of this subspecies is not only their most outstanding growth and beauty of spots, they have five elegant horns.
7
Mountain gorilla
The merciless deforestation in the habitat of this giant anthropoid ape and poaching for meat led to a critical number of gorillas. At the moment, there are just over 500 individuals. Mountain gorillas live in the remaining uncut alpine areas of wild forests of equatorial Africa. At their place of residence, the governments of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda have organized national parks for the protection of mountain gorillas.
8
Snow leopard or snow leopard
It lives in 12 Asian countries, including the Russian Altai Mountains and the total number of these cats is from 4 to 7 thousand. Almost the majority of leopards live in the mountains of China. In Russia there are no more than five hundred snow leopards. The country has created a national program for the protection and reproduction of the numbers of these magnificent animals.
9
Kalimatran and Sumatran orangutans
The catastrophic deforestation in Southeast Asia and hunting have reduced the number of orangutans to a critical minimum. In recent years, their range and numbers have halved. To save them, special farms are created where orphans are raised and adult monkeys are taken from the smugglers.
10
Madagascar Dive
An endangered bird of the duck family lives in the territory of Madagascar. It was considered completely extinct, while in 2006 about 20 birds were found on one of the lakes. At the moment, there are about a hundred individuals.
11
Amsterdam Albatross
Lives on the island of Amsterdam, Indian Ocean. In the middle of the last century, there were only ten adult birds. The critical numbers called on the community of scientists to take urgent action to conserve the Amsterdam albatrosses. Today, there are more than a hundred adult birds.
12
Forest ibis
It is found in the wild only in Turkey and partially in Syria. Previously, he lived in the Alps, but remained only in European zoos. There are only up to 250 birds.
13
California condor
A century ago, his flight could be seen over the entire North American continent. But by the middle of the 20th century, it began to rapidly die out. Merciless extermination led to the fact that in nature they were almost gone, and about thirty birds lived in zoos. Since 1992, these birds have been guarded; a special captive condor breeding program has been created. At the moment, the population managed to recover up to three hundred birds, and all of them were released.
By the way, condors are among the largest birds, a list of which you see in this article.
14
North American bison
In the 19th century, huge herds of these animals lived throughout North America. But because of thirst, the buffalo’s profits were killed by millions. A photograph of the 19th century has been preserved, which captured a huge mountain of bison skulls. This horrific in its scope extermination led to the almost complete disappearance of animals that survived the ice age and the extinction of mammoths. Fortunately, in 1894, a law was passed in the United States prohibiting the hunting of any animals. At that time, less than a thousand bison remained alive. Now there are about 30 thousand heads, and all of them are privately owned, but this figure is still threatening the total number of North American bison.
15
Bison
This is the last representative of European wild bulls, the genus of bison. The habitat is the forests of Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century there were only a few cows and bulls, from which the modern bison population went. The destructive actions that the Second World War brought brought the successful breeding of buffalo to the brink of collapse. The creation of the reserve "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" and "Oryol Polesie" made a huge contribution to the preservation of this unique animal. Now more than 3,500 animals live in the reserves.
16
Oedipus and Pied pie tamarins
Now the main species of tamarins, and there are about ten of them, are not threatened with destruction, only Oedipus and Pegom tamarins, whose population has been halved due to deforestation, are in danger. Their number does not exceed several thousand individuals. These little cute marmosets are in great demand as pets, because of this they are uncontrollably caught and sold on the black market.
17
White-bellied Raptor
This exotic animal of the pangolin genus lives in the tropical forests of the African savannahs of Central and West Africa. In 2014, this species of lizards was included in the list of vulnerable ones. If in the near future no measures will be taken to protect these animals, then after 10 years their population may be halved.
18
Ring-tailed lemur
Feline (or Ring-tailed) lemurs can be seen on dry open lands and in forests in southern Madagascar. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified this species as endangered. This is because the population of these lemurs has declined to 2,000– 2,400 animals - a shocking reduction of 95% since 2000. Key drivers of declining lemur populations include rapid habitat loss, poaching, and pet trading in the black market.
19
Nosach
For the third largest island of the planet Barneo, this species of monkey is endemic. Most often they can be found near rivers, as well as in coastal areas, in mangroves and in swamps. Due to the uncontrolled felling of trees, over the past 40 years, the population of nosen has declined by 40%. Also the reason for this decline is the hunt for these unusual animals. Their meat is very much appreciated in Chinese medicine.
By the way, on our site thebiggest.ru you can see a list of the largest islands of the Earth in area.
20
Little panda
Of these beautiful animals in the world there are about 2500 thousand. They live in the Himalayan mountains in India and China. The industrial felling of trees, as well as the hunt for these cute animals put them on the brink of extinction.
Summarize
Having decided to write an interesting article about endangered animals, we could not even think how many species need help. And the most offensive is that the fault of most animals is the fault of man. We have described only a small part of the species threatened with extinction, but this is only a small peak of a huge iceberg. Below we will publish some more photos of beautiful animals. TheBiggest.ru asks you to write in the comments if you saw someone from our list and share your emotions with us.
