Excavations occur daily around the world, and scientists are discovering truly amazing and valuable finds. Also in the bowels you can unexpectedly discover new life forms, outlandish landscapes and even entire cities.
Even with a relatively small volume of research on water depths, we can mention 10 amazing findings.
10. Underwater river at the bottom of the Black Sea
Here is a discovery made in our country. In the bowels of the Black Sea, the ubiquitous British scientists (surprisingly not our locals) found a strange underwater river of such a size that if it existed on land, it would become the 6th largest on the planet in terms of full-flow. The depth of the riverbed in some areas reaches as much as 35 meters, and the width is about 1 km. Surprisingly, in addition to the usual current, whirlpools and waterfalls were noted on its surface. And the water itself in such a natural formation is much colder than in the sea. How did such a unique underwater river appear? Scientists suggest that it was formed as a result of water from the Sea of Marmara (which has higher salinity and density) entering our Black couple centuries ago. The river flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
9. The underwater city of Sichen
In the Chinese province of Zhejiang, many decades ago, there was a mysterious town of Shichen, which one far from perfect day simply disappeared from the map. It was later established that the valley in which the city was located was filled with water in order to create an artificial reservoir and build a hydroelectric power station on it. Local authorities relocated about 290,000 residents from the territory. A dam was installed on the site of the city, as a result of which Shichen simply plunged to the bottom of an artificial lake. Over the years, stairs and beams of the city were discovered in the abyss of water, which were remarkably preserved, despite the surrounding conditions.
8. Bimini Road
The Bahamas are famous for their discovery made in the 30s. The found underwater route, called "Bimini Road", has become a landmark of the islands and one of the main tourist sites. At a shallow depth of 6 meters, a mysterious formation was discovered that looked like a path in the ocean. There are even legends that it is he who leads to the city of Atlantis buried in it, while others claim that it was laid by Egyptian defenders. The spectacle is really exciting and accessible to everyone.
7. Spiders
On land, we bypass these arthropod creatures with distrust and fear. Imagine the surprise of divers when the real spiders were found in the depths of the waters. No, this is not some specific species of fish or mollusks, but really water spiders that live in the watery expanses of Asia (north) and Europe. They also weave cobwebs, which fill with air bubbles and are fueled by oxygen, as from a specific “charger”. To the surface, these representatives of the fauna emerge only once every few hours (sometimes once a day).
6. Engines from Apollo 11
Not so long ago, the details of 2 rocket engines of a spacecraft were lifted from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It was he who sent the first astronauts to the moon. Debris has been lying in the bowels of the ocean since 1969. Their discovery was a real feat - the author of the project, Jeff Bezos, himself drew up a plan and funded a search program, for which journalists called him “crazy.” Nevertheless, the historical, scientific and cultural heritage is now on the surface, and one can only guess how Bezos will dispose of the remains of the great Apollo 11.
5. Locomotives
One can hardly imagine how fragments of rockets and engines were at the bottom of the ocean. But what can you say about the fact that in 1985, 2 locomotives of a rare sample of the 50s of the 19th century were found off the Long Branch (in the state of New Jersey) in 1985? It is still unknown who designed the trains, for what purpose and, most interesting, how they ended up at the bottom of the sea. According to existing theory, locomotives were transported by a barge that suffered during a severe storm.
4. Mysterious object in the shape of a circle
Six years ago, a Swiss team of divers explored the depths of the Baltic Sea and accidentally noticed a strange cylindrical object. The origin and its intended purpose have not yet been determined. Some scholars believe this to be an unremarkable piece of prehistoric rock. Others prophesy the fate of the "new Stonehenge." Another surprising assumption is that the object is a kind of underground volcano or ice pump. But the most popular theory is that it is an unidentified space object (in appearance it really remotely resembles a ship from Star Wars).
3. Antikythera mechanism
Seekers of pearls in the landmark 1900 stumbled upon a unique mechanism at a shipwreck in Greece. In honor of the area, the object was nicknamed "Antikythera". This find is one of the most unique and ancient, since it dates from about 2 century BC. e., when there was no question of any reasonable mechanisms. Scientists suggest that the device was able to record the planets of movement of the planets and, accordingly, could keep a chronology. Until now, the real function has not been established, but because of the complexity of the design, it was called the prehistoric “computer”.
2. More than 10 thousand emeralds at a depth of 21 meters
The real treasures dilute our rubbish rubric! Once, an amateur diver during a swim in 2010 did not even think that he would be so lucky. Off the coast of Florida at a depth of more than 20 meters, he discovered deposits of emeralds (about 10 thousand pieces) with a total value of millions. Disputes are still ongoing as to how such production ended up at the bottom of the sea. Jay Miskovich, the one who found the emeralds, was dragged through the courts by the federals, ordering him only temporary possession of jewelry. The man could not sell even 1 carat of the treasure found. Therefore, or for some other sinister reason, Jay eventually committed suicide.
1. The Lost Ancient Egyptian City of Heracles
Frank Goddio, a researcher and archaeologist, 18 years ago discovered in Egypt the ruins of an ancient city at a distance of just over six kilometers from the coast. According to legend, once the city was visited by the mythical hero Hercules, and even Elena Troyanskaya. Scientists carefully examine the sunken settlement, raising valuable elements to the surface. According to data, he was buried in the bowels of the Mediterranean Sea about 1.2 thousand years ago. Archaeologists have already raised five-meter statues to land, the remains of more than 60 ships, as well as coins. The city was reliably protected by sand and well preserved for researchers. But the reason for the sinking of Heracles in the bowels of the sea has not yet been established.
Just imagine what a storehouse of information is the body of water on the planet. If we explored most, we could come closer to the clues of antiquity, find answers to many questions, and even completely rewrite history. Of course, the work of divers, submersible and lifting mechanisms, research and optical equipment is quite expensive and can take years.
